Food and Friends

The Pussycat and I are suckers for great food. Our other weakness is great conversation. Sounds pretentious doesn’t it? Anyway, the other day, Les Deux Chefs called us and asked over to celebrate their new backyard project.

Les Deux had spent a week putting in a new patio and pergala in the backyard. I gotta tell you, as a man who has never aspired to great things in the backyard, I was impressed. I cannot believe the amount of brick they laid, let alone all the woodwork, excavation, etc. Wow.

So we, along with the parents of both Les Deux went and celebrated. You have to understand what a party means to Les Deux. It’s music, talking and all the good things about a spring evening that you can think of. Most importantly though, it’s about the food. When most people think about party food, they think Doritos, Coke and if your lucky a little homemade velveeta dip.

Not at Maison du Les Deux Chefs. Food here means something totally different. Let me tell you what we had. First off, Chef L’s mother, La Mère Incroyable, brought the appetizer. To most people, as I’ve said, an appetizer means Doritos. Not in that family. La Mère Incroyable is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever known. I can remember when Chef L and I were in highschool together. Even then, at 15, when I first met La Mère Incroyable I was amazed. A classier, smarter and more capable woman you would be hard pressed to find. On top of that, she cooks. I think it’s where Chef L gets it.

She brought this incredible layered pastry with crackers and bread that was so good, that even now, my mouth waters when thinking about it. You can see a picture of it at the top of this entry. Trust me, the picture doesn’t do it justice.

When you have the main course at backyard parties, generally its hotdogs and if your lucky hamburgers. Not here. Here we had grilled medallions of pork tenderloin. Then there was dessert. Chef L is a pastry chef at one of the best restaurants in town. If not the best. (shameless plug here) If you’re ever in Tulsa, Flavors is a to go for great food. The dessert was easily one of the best I’ve had. Not to mention that I’m a sucker for bread pudding. Wow. Wow. This is their version of cooking something up in the backyard. In my backyard, I’m lucky if my grill doesn’t explode when I light it. I know it’s just waiting for me to get close enough when I light it … then BANG!

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I am a real foodie.

Honestly, though, the best part for me is just kicking back and spending time with Les Deux Chefs. They are probably two of my favorite people. I’ve known Chef L since highschool and she is one of my most trusted friends. Her husband, Chef I is probably the best example of what I consider to be a wonderful human being. Everytime I get near him I want to hug him, and believe me, I don’t swing that way. I really just love them both. Even the Pussycat who is notorious for being fickle in friends, adores them. Plus, they have the most adorable child. I have never been one to be in a hurry for children, but La Petite Chef makes me want to hurry ours along.

Well that my friends, is the story of our Sunday barbeque. Good food, good friends, a wife that I love and a baby coming along … what more can a man ask for? If nothing else, I am content.
